Course description

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a critical level of medical care used for patients experiencing life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or airway obstruction. It focuses on the immediate recognition of sudden cardiac arrest, activation of the emergency response system, and initiation of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with minimal interruptions in chest compressions.

BLS also includes providing effective ventilations using a barrier device or bag-mask, defibrillation with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and ensuring the victim’s airway remains open. The key components are the Chain of Survival, which emphasizes early recognition, early CPR, rapid defibrillation, effective advanced life support, and post-cardiac arrest care.

BLS can be performed by healthcare providers and trained lay rescuers. The goal is to sustain vital organ function and improve the chances of survival until advanced medical interventions become available.
